Racial Tensions Inside and Outside LA County Jails

Hosted by
A black inmate died yesterday after a fight at the Men's Central Jail. It's the second death in the system since riots began nine days ago at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic. With 18,000 inmates in Los Angeles County jails, today, 200 prisoners were transferred to state institutions; another 400 will be sent off later this week. Last week on this program, Sheriff Lee Baca said the ongoing trouble is caused by racial tension between black and Hispanic gangs, a fact of life that begins with neighborhood gangs. Others say there are too many prisoners and not enough space or sheriff's deputies to stand guard. We hear more about racial tensions inside and outside LA County's jails from attorneys and civil rights activists.

Last week, after eight years as President and CEO of the Getty Trust, Barry Munitz resigned, giving up $2 million in severance pay and returning $250,000 to settle any possible legal actions. Tyler Green, writer and editor of the visual arts blog, Modern Art Notes, which appears on artsjournal.com, considers the new opportunities for the Getty Trust.
